2012 Competition

RE-PURPOSED ILLUMINATIONS SCULPTURE CONTEST

A sculpture competition and exhibition for middle and high school students.

Michael Shaw, Director of Horizon Bay at Hyde Park, walked into our Historic Hyde Park N.A. (HHPNA) Board meeting with a plastic historic street light globe. “We have no use for 30 of these, any ideas?” Seems these globes were too bright for the ambiance of the building and had to be replaced.

Candy Olson, Hillsborough County Public School Board and HHPNA Board member, suggested we approach Dana Warner, Supervisor, K-12 Arts, about having a contest to see what the art students could do (artistically) with these globes.

Fast forward six months . . .

On September 13, 2011 Dana announced the contest to middle and high school teachers and 11 teachers responded that same day. 24 student groups from 15 high and middle schools submitted entries.

We asked local artists Charlie Greacen, towntiles.com, and Lyla Haggard, to not only take on the globe challenge, but to help judge the event. Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandy Murman will round out the judges for the event in December.

The Opening and Awards Ceremony was December 2, 2011, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm at the newly completed Horizon Bay at Hyde Park Retirement Community; 800 Azeele St, Tampa.

After the Awards Ceremony, Tampa Realistic Artists – Old Hyde Park Art Center, 705 Swann Avenue, hosted the sculpture exhibit from December 4 – December 10.
