BATHROOM MAYHEM

Declan NeSmith

Teacher:  Julianne Gonzalez – Progress Village Middle Magnet School of the Arts

Artist’s Statement:    Hello, my name is Declan Nesmith and I am in seventh grade at Progress Village, Middle Magnet School of the Arts. For my entry to the DooDads competition, I created a piece titled, ‘Bathroom Mayhem’ which is a snapshot of a bathroom that is exploding with water, which is the main theme for the competition. The reason I chose to create this is because I wanted to make something that was fun and you wouldn’t necessarily think of when you think of water. When i first thought about a concept, things like river, ocean, wet, rain, and drip came to mind. But then I tried thinking outside the box and thought of words like crash, splash, burst, and wave, all of which sparked my idea of an exploding bathroom. To create the actual project, I used a lot of cardboard and hot glue to make the individual pieces, and I used an egg carton to make the toilet and sink. I spray painted the sink, toilet, and bathtub and most of the rest was hand painted. I would actually go into my bathroom at home to look for details I could add and realized I should add a mirror. I used fabric on the walls to mimic wallpaper and have a design. My favorite part of making this though was making the actual water which I made plastic molds for before pouring resin in to harden. It was super cool to work with and is how I was able to achieve the organic water shapes and splashes. Overall, I am super confident and happy with the result of my project and I think I achieved my goal of making something unique having to do with water.
