The 3rd Annual Repurposed DooDad Art & Sculpture Exhibit opened to the public on May 5, 2014 at the beautiful Tampa History Center. This year’s show and juried competition culminates several months of effort from hundreds of students from Hillsborough County schools, encompassing the creative work of talented elementary, middle and high school students. The 2014 competition features artwork made with 3000 wooden cigar boxes that were donated by Support the Troops, Inc.

Participating art classes were provided up to 20 boxes for use in each entry and the cigar-box theme, so much a part of Tampa’s unique history, illustrates the importance of repurposing and recycling objects to create sustainable art. Students have spent all of this school year in creating their work. The finished sculptures are exhibited at the Tampa Bay History Center for the entire month of May 2014.

The Doodad Competition invests in our students in their development of the 4 C’s of 21st Century Skills (Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking and Creativity). Every sculpture shows a different solution to the puzzle. At the same time, our exhibition at the Tampa Bay History Center provides a fabulous venue to showcase the students’ originality and the sponsors’ commitment to the community!
