Description: Freshwater Pond Life : Our project focuses on water conservation and demonstrates why we should help to prevent further pollution. Our waterways become polluted when people litter. The litter sinks to the bottom of ponds and lakes. This starves the oxygen in the environment and kills fish, apple snails, clams, and crustaceans. Moving up the food chain it will starve birds, turtles, frogs, and alligators. bears, big cats, and wolves which feed on fish and other aquatic animals. Dead animals decay and decompose on the freshwater floors, which impacts water quality by releasing nitrogen and phosphorus back into the environment. This organic matter breaks down and leads to algal blooms that change the pH levels and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions through the release of carbon dioxide and methane. This further breaks down the oxygen level. This project taught us to be more conservative with recyclable materials. It also showed us the value of protecting our environment, by making small changes and choosing not to litter. We had to use unconventional materials which would normally become trash but for this project, we showed how trash could be repurposed as an educational tool. This was interesting to complete because it was different from any art project that we have ever done before.
